Cases of electrical storms breaking out directly above erupting volcanoes are well documented, although scientists differ on what causes them. Picture taken May 2, 2008. (Carlos Gutierrez)

Before a shift starts in most Chinese service companies, the staff will be lined up on the pavement infront of their place of work and given motivating pep talks by their bosses. Not a bad idea in terms of focusing a team, although occasionally this is taken to bizarre lengths. The beauty parlour by my building has their stylists doing full-on techno dance workouts at 9am every morning, ready for a day spent crimping hair and gossiping. The photo below sees a line-up of kitchen staff on the famous Gui Jie food street ahead of their insanely busy evening shift.

These photos were taken in Gulou, Beijing on a warm September night a couple of weeks after the Olympics. After living here for a while you can forget about the air quality. Every now and again though, on nights like this, it makes you stop and stare. Strangely beautiful.
